The soil rake (penggaruk tanah) is a traditional agricultural tool used to level, clean, and loosen the soil after it has been hoed. The tool consists of a row of iron or bamboo teeth (in older versions) attached to a long wooden handle.
Beyond its function as a farming implement, the penggaruk tanah represents the Minangkabau people’s agrarian heritage. It symbolizes cooperation and patience in communal labor (gotong royong), and it is often used as a metaphor for “refining the heart and mind” before gaining knowledge and understanding.
