The Saluang is one of the traditional Minangkabau wind instruments, resembling a long flute and typically made from thin bamboo (bamboo talang or small bamboo) with tone holes on the front.
It is believed that the saluang has existed for hundreds of years, particularly in inland regions such as Solok, Sawahlunto, and Tanah Datar. Holding a deep cultural role, the saluang is often used to accompany traditional Minangkabau songs (dendang) such as dendang saluang or rabab pasambahan. With its soft and wistful sound, the saluang evokes a melancholic atmosphere, often associated with feelings of longing, sorrow, and separation.
