This is an antique ceremonial vessel or box, presumably originating from West Sumatra, Indonesia. Its shape is bulbous or gourd-like, featuring a separate, fitted lid. The lid has a tiered, dome-like structure topped with a decorative finial, resembling a small mosque dome or a stupa.
The entire surface of both the vessel and its lid is adorned with extremely fine and dense carvings or engravings. The ornamentation consists of intricate geometric and vegetal (floral) patterns, characteristic of traditional Indonesian carving arts, likely influenced by Islamic art. The object’s color is a dark, brownish-black with a distinct patina, indicating it is made of metal (possibly bronze, brass, or another alloy) and is of considerable age. The main body of the vessel is supported by an octagonal base or foot. Two white paper labels are affixed to the center of the vessel’s body, which likely contain inventory codes or collection information.
