Jam Gadang is the most famous landmark in Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra, and a symbol of Minangkabau pride. This 26-meter-tall clock tower was built in 1926 during the Dutch colonial era and still stands majestically in the heart of the city, at Taman Sabai Nan Aluih.

The uniqueness of Jam Gadang lies in its architecture, which blends European design with Minangkabau cultural elements. This is clearly seen in its roof shaped like gonjong, the horn-shaped roof of the traditional Minangkabau house. The large clock faces on all four sides use Roman numerals, with the number four written as “IIII” instead of “IV”, making it even more distinctive and historically valuable.

Jam Gadang is not merely a timekeeper, but a silent witness to Bukittinggi’s long history, from the colonial period and Japanese occupation to Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Today, the Jam Gadang area is a vibrant tourism and social center where visitors gather, take photos, enjoy the city atmosphere, and taste Minangkabau culinary delights.
