Located in Sitiung District, Dharmasraya Regency, Rumah Gadang Siguntur stands as an important symbol of history and customary tradition in coastal Minangkabau society. The structure seen today is a reconstruction of an earlier rumah gadang that was destroyed by fire in 1974. Although relatively new, its form and architectural design faithfully replicate the original, preserving its historical value and cultural identity.
Rumah Gadang Siguntur is built as a traditional Minangkabau stilt house, featuring four soaring gonjong roofs and a central veranda. Its architectural style follows the Bodi Chaniago tradition, reflecting principles of deliberation and equality within the Minangkabau customary system. The building faces south, with the staircase and main entrance positioned at the center, and is constructed entirely from wood. Its rectangular layout measures approximately 16 by 6 meters—simple in form, yet rich in philosophical meaning.
Historically, the name Siguntur has been known since around the 15th century, several centuries after the center of the Melayu Pura Kingdom was relocated from Dharmasraya to the Saruaso highlands. The spread of Islam in Minangkabau marked a significant new chapter in the life of the kingdom and its people. The Siguntur Kingdom was one of the polities under the influence and protection of the Pagaruyung Kingdom. Traces of Islamization remain strong in the area, including the presence of an old mosque located not far from Rumah Gadang Siguntur.
Surrounded by a tranquil nagari atmosphere, expansive rice fields, and a community that continues to uphold traditional values, Rumah Gadang Siguntur offers a reflective and authentic cultural tourism experience.
